Why Marijuana will never be legalized

There’s a vast range of people that oppose the legalization of Marijuana for a range of reasons. Some reasons are acceptable but a lot are very strange and selfish. Most people are just plain ignorant of the facts, refusing to accept cannabis. Its being proven to help medically, and its also a well known fact that cannabis does considerably less damage to your body than alcohol and cigarettes. So why is cannabis still illegal in many countries around the world?
The Uninformed – These are the people that have being misinformed about how harmful marijuana is to society. They truly believe that cannabis is the drug of the devil.
The Government – Because Cannabis has been illegal for a very long time, no politicians will stand up for marijuana and tell the truth about pot. Any politician that does are labelled as a druggie by the opposition which makes it a very tough battle.
Religion – Religion turn there nose up at drugs completely, this is for a number of reasons. The main being that if a religious group fought for the legalization of cannabis, they may loose many members. Religion is loosing its place in modern day society, its being replaced by modern day media. This is a tough enough battle as it is for religious leaders.
Moralizers – Moralizers are better than you, they always have been and always will be. There not arrogant either, just better than us. That’s what they think anyway and because of this they look down their noses at drug users and druggies alike.
People that don’t do drugs – People that don’t agree with drugs at all. They don’t drink, smoke and in some extremes don’t even drink coffee. They don’t understand why anyone would want to take any drugs, the world would be a better place without drugs. I used to be one of these people.
The Alcohol Lobby – Legalizing cannabis could have a massive impact on alcohol sales. The Alcohol Lobby are worried that cannabis will replace alcohol as the recreational drug of choice. Worldwide this could cost billions and have major impacts on the world trade market.
The Tobacco Lobby – It has being proven that cannabis can help people break a nicotine addiction. However the less people that smoke cigarettes, the less money that is made by the government. This money has to me made elsewhere.
Law Enforcement – Law enforcements spend large amounts of money and time to fight marijuana, money and time that could be much better spent hunting murderers and rapists. These are funds that could be returned to the tax payer and put to better use. The funds could be used to create new educational facilities for underprivileged children.
Pot Dealers – All pot dealers would be out of business almost instantly, prices would be slashed and all crime related to cannabis dealing would vanish over night.
Wood Industry – You may wonder why wood industry cares so much, well its there wood that creates paper and building materials. However hemp could be used as a source of fibre and replace wood and put an end to the wood industry. That means we wouldn’t have to continue cutting down the worlds forests and upsetting the natural habitat even further than we already have.
Private Prisons – Private prisons would not be as crowded, and because of this would loose revenue. However this would create room for people that have committed more serious offences.
Trial Lawyers – When the average joe is faced with cannabis related criminal chargers, they go running to the lawyers. Lawyers make billions every year defending marijuana cases.
Mental Hospitals – If you smoke cannabis then you instantly have mental problems, well according to the mass media anyway. Mental hospitals generate huge revenues treating people for problems that don’t exist. If cannabis was legalized, mental hospital staff would have to get real jobs.
Republicans – Smoking cannabis gives you a distinct advantage, you can step back and look at reality to see how the world really is. Once your stoned you have a new found tolerance for political issues. It becomes harder to hate homosexuals and other races for example. You begin to dislike violence and racism, and anything that has a negative impact on society.
Political Cowards – Politicians are all about votes, being a politician is essentially a popularity contest in suits. Politicians often pose with figures of authority to spread the anti-cannabis message. Political cowards need an artificial issue to face up against so they can avoid the real issues that require real thinking.
Others – There’s a vast range of groups that would feel a negative effect if cannabis was legalized. This may be out of the box thinking, however hospitals would have less alcohol related incidents to deal with (Specifically a problem with privatised health services), Car garages would have less repairs, Pubs and Clubs that didn’t join the new trend would suffer. Governments worldwide have put years of work into integrating smoking bans, these would be undermined. A lot of people have a lot to lose.
As you can see, there are some groups that hold key places in today’s society with serious issues about the legalizing of cannabis. Although most of these issues are rather selfish and money greedy, some do have a fair point. If large scales of people were out of work, taxes would have to reflect this for example.
What are your thoughts? This is a hot topic for discussion, let us know in the comments below.
i also think cannibis should be legalized.. but some of the ways you’re arguing for it are ridiculous mate.
“Mental Hospitals – If you smoke cannabis then you instantly have mental problems, well according to the mass media anyway. Mental hospitals generate huge revenues treating people for problems that don’t exist. If cannabis was legalized, mental hospital staff would have to get real jobs.”
im sorry but clear and obvious links between long term cannabis use and mental disorders.. thousands of people around the world suffer now with mental problems because of the amount of cannabis they’ve smoked. you should know this dude! do some research into it and come back and give me evidence saying that there is no evidence.
“Republicans – Smoking cannabis gives you a distinct advantage, you can step back and look at reality to see how the world really is. Once your stoned you have a new found tolerance for political issues.”
smoking cannabis doesnt give you a distinct advantage. are you suggesting that everyone around the world should smoke it? then we’d all have that distinct advantage?
by the way you’re talking, you make it seem that pot smokers should be benefitting from their drug but we both know people that get stoned.. get lazy..! the memory gets impaired and the body doesnt function as fast or aswell as sober.
you have it spot on talking about the alcohol industry and the misinformed.
i have to tell you your terribly wrong about the religious groups if you’re referring to Christianity and Islam. the Bible and the Koran are against all procreational drugs.. not because its fashion to.. but because of the beliefs involved. Most Christians believe that the body is a temple for God, not to be deviled. They’re not against smoking cannabis just because they wanna get more members…
I argue for the legalisation for cannabis because society should paint all alcohol and cannabis with the same brush. you’ve heard the argument: “if alcohol was invented today it would be illegal”?? it is true that alcohol is part of Western traditional culture and cannabis has always been the underdog.. known for a few thousand years but never really caught on in the same way.
alcohol damages the body long term. so does cannabis but many people don’t like the idea of a drug damaging the mind in the long term.
for chilling out… no drug beats cannabis. its social, its pleasurable and far safer than any other procreational drug.
crime would be cut if cannabis was legal. it would take away some funds to organised crime. it could be taxed, even extortionately like alcohol and fags.. and the money raised go to more social services. it could be monitored and the production could be more efficient.
you could go to tescos and buy an eighth thats identical to the one last week and the week before.. sweet! never get a bad batch. never get it wet.. never have sand in it.. never sugarsprayed.. how awesome.
its a good idea to do a website arguing for the legalization of cannabis, but you shouldnt feel that all those groups are your enemy.. you should show how they could benefit.. realistically.
because i know you’ll wanna argue with what iv wrote.. please email me
just be careful dude.. please dont think that you can smoke as much cannabis as you want and it wont damage your body for later in life
i think it SHOULD be legalized but should be controlled. If i had “constant” access to pot i would never get anywhere. I disagree with the way it is being projected; but it can cause mental issues to emerge in the wrong people because they can not deal with it. So the way it is now can stop a lot of pot going to this type of person. I dunno, im a mix with this.
Zac – Very constructive, your opinions are welcomed. I think I may have not properly communicated my points properly in some parts of the above post. Reading it back, some parts dont make full sense. This will be corrected in due course.
Buying an 8th from tesco every week? that sounds like heaven. Imagine what a tesco value eigth baggy would look like, would be we an extra clubcard point if we brought them back as well as normal carrying bags =D
I have had vast experiences with cannabis that have taken me to some high and low low times in life. If anything its only made me stronger!
Lee: How would you control something like that? Limit people to x amount a week for example? That would be very hard to integrate. It has being projected in the wrong way. For example youths of today are getting a lot of bad press, youths of today smoke cannabis. Its easy to understand how people link it with negativity.
You give them a card, and in order to be eligible for the card they must work full-time and pay the same amount of taxs as everybody else. So they stay a member of society and get to do what they want. If they slip and lose their job; they lose their card and their right to smoke.
I understand how people link it negitivity but i don’t agree with why. People should be responsible for their own actions and not use a drug as an excuse. They are still them, whatever a drugs does.
Just legalize everything. The drug war is a farce. The real crime is the war on drugs. Ppl are not afraid of drugs. There is a drug store on every corner. If it is mind-expanding drugs we are afraid of, it is obviously the mind expansions we fear. The ppl in power want to stay in power. The ppl with money want to keep their money. The ppl that want us to be afraid of mind expanding drugs have a heavily vested interest in our minds remaining quite narrow!
Put Ron Paul in office and see what happens…
Forgot one. Herb is very easy to grow yourself ya know, being a weed. Overgrow the gov’t. Peace.
a few of my friends said that they read somewhere and it said that marijuana doesnt kill your brain cells that it just puts them in a comma like stage and it takes about 20 years for them to get back to normal. so really the only way that you would have mental problems is because your entire brain is in a comma like stage. i have smoked since i was 6 and im almost 17 and im one of the smartest girls in my school. so i dont think it causes big mental problems, maybe not cause any at all!!
I have to disagree with the Republican section. There are just as many right-winged potheads as there are left-winged. I am personally libertarian, but have grown up around republican potheads. Republicans are not out to convince you to be racist or prejudice. Yes, many republicans have had a reputation for being racist or prejudice, but you cannot be prejudice toward Republicans by saying they’re all out to convince the world to HATE certain groups. Your stooping down to the level that you are criticizing. Doesn’t that seem ironic and childish? That sort of immature unprofessionalism is exactly what people expect from the typical “pothead.” Is that the stigma you want to give to the rest of us who simply enjoy smoking ganja over drinking alcohol? Please be careful what you say in this drug war, and make sure that you are not implying that you speak for all of us.
The whole argument of keeping marijuana illegal is ridiculous. Cannabis wasn’t illegalized in the first place because the government thought they were doing what was best for the population. It was about racism and associating the drug with the influx of Mexicans that came here in the 20s and 30s. Associate marijuana with foreign “invaders” and ‘Boom!’ its illegal. Its completely sad. The whole issue is completely unconstitutional and has been pointed out to Congress numerous times, but they chose to ignore it. The fact is, that marijuana users like ourselves are powerless in this country. The older, moral majority in this country, particularly 40-70 year olds hold the power. Some of them may have been flower children and baby boomers, but the majority aren’t. Most of them are Christian Republicans who have believe that they know what’s best for everyone. Its sad. Until we finally get someone in the White House like Ron Paul or Obama, things won’t change. It sucks.
Perhaps I’m wrong on this issue but I also heard a huge chunk of the reason marijuana is illegal is due to the loss of revenue it would cause the petroleum industry. The growing of marijuana and hemp products alike could take over so many aspects of life it’s quite amazing. It can be used for paper products, clothing, apparel, ropes, and most importantly gas! Legalizing cannabis would make all hemp production uncontrollable. They already have limitations on hemp products and the shit doesn’t even get you high. Now why would they put limitation on a product that you can’t get high off of? Partly because of the connection to marijuana but mainly because of the loss of revenue. It’s such a versatile product you can make practically anything out of it. But once it was found to produce gas at a faster pace which would put oil companies out of business because of the speed it can be produce which provides cheaper fuel costs and essentially more jobs for everyone. That right there should be the main focus for legallizing. And everyone in the world right now is ready for an innovative idea for cheaper fuel cost and something a little more enviromentally friendly.
i do not smoke weed but i have heard about reportsof benefits of it i beleive they should legalize it and tax it
yo, weed should be legal. there is no REAL arguement to why it shouldn’t be. moral standards should not be taken into consideration TO heavily upon legalization of the drug. there is NO LONG TERM STUDIES that have been made to prove or disprove the fact that weed is bad for you. so as far as i’m concerned, that arguement is out. it intoxicates you yes, so you shouldn’t smoke and drive, but that to is not a real arguement to use. alcohol is a legal substance that intoxicates you, and therefore can have the same effects on you, and you still can drive. you shouldn’t, but many people do. the drug has many medical uses, and we use morphine, which is HEROINE as a pain killer, so why shouldn’t we use medical marijuana? it chills you out, making people have less anger problems and people who smoke are almost NEVER violent. violence rate would go down. the U.S government could make it an industry, making a lot of money to boost our ever failing economy. it would be regulated like alcohol, making it much harder for young teens to get their hands on it.
here are some arguements i have found online at variuos sources which have good points

The first and most basic reason that marijuana should be legal is that there is no good reason for it not to be legal. Some people ask ‘why should marijuana be legalized?” but we should ask “Why should marijuana be illegal?” From a philosophical point of view, individuals deserve the right to make choices for themselves. The government only has a right to limit those choices if the individual’s actions endanger someone else. This does not apply to marijuana, since the individual who chooses to use marijuana does so according to his or her own free will. The government also may have a right to limit individual actions if the actions pose a significant threat to the individual. But this argument does not logically apply to marijuana because marijuana is far less dangerous than some drugs which are legal, such as alcohol and tobacco.
The second important reason that marijuana should be legal is that it would save our government lots of money. In the United States, all levels of government (federal, state, and local authorities) participate in the “War on Drugs.” We currently spend billions of dollars every year to chase peaceful people who happen to like to get high. These people get locked up in prison and the taxpayers have to foot the bill. We have to pay for food, housing, health care, attorney fees, court costs, and other expenses to lock these people up. This is extremely expensive! We could save billions of dollars every year as a nation if we stop wasting money locking people up for having marijuana. In addition, if marijuana were legal, the government would be able to collect taxes on it, and would have a lot more money to pay for effective drug education programs and other important causes.
The third major reason that marijuana should be legal is because prohibition does not help the country in any way, and causes a lot of problems. There is no good evidence that prohibition decreases drug use, and there are several theories that suggest prohibition might actually increase drug use (i.e. the “forbidden fruit” effect, and easier accessibility for youth). One unintended effect of marijuana prohibition is that marijuana is very popular in American high schools. Why? Because it is available. You don’t have to be 21 to buy marijuana — marijuana dealers usually don’t care how old you are as long as you have money. It is actually easier for many high school students to obtain marijuana than it is for them to obtain alcohol, because alcohol is legal and therefore regulated to keep it away from kids. If our goal is to reduce drug consumption, then we should focus on open and honest programs to educate youth, regulation to keep drugs away from kids, and treatment programs for people with drug problems. But the current prohibition scheme does not allow such reasonable approaches to marijuana; instead we are stuck with ‘DARE’ police officers spreading lies about drugs in schools, and policies that result in jail time rather than treatment for people with drug problems. We tried prohibition with alcohol, and that failed miserably. We should be able to learn our lesson and stop repeating the same mistake.
Some religions instruct their followers to use marijuana. Just like Christianity and Judaism instruct their followers to drink wine on certain occaisions, some Hindus, Buddhists, Rastafarians, and members of other religions use marijuana as part of their spiritual and religious ceremonies. These people deserve the freedom to practice their religion as they see fit. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution says that the government cannot ‘prohibit the free exercise’ of religion, and so marijuana should be legal
now tell me why it shouldn’t be legalized.
didn’t have time to read all the comments, (I will later) but I’d just like to thank everyone for their input to the discussion and of course the writer of the article for creating the discussion. most of you seem to be nice and interesting people =) thomas wilstonian, we shall grow them over brother. Peace from sWEEDen
i obviosly support legalization. I personaly dont drink or smoke cigs, i dont have any problem with people that do i just dont really like them, and in my half a year of basically smoking weed on a regualer basis i have gotten a job, been playing basketball 4 times a week and doing better in school, now, obviosly weed had no effect on this and thats my point, it doesnt change you like people say it does it simply improves your attitude. by the way, i thought this article took an interesting look at some more of our enemies, and ill be honest i only would have mentioned half, but thanks for the info, much appreciated. Peace, from Buffalo, im sparkin a j right now…
